Planning your flight becomes easier when you understand how boarding works. Southwest Airlines has moved from its traditional open-seating system to assigned seating, giving passengers a seat assignment before boarding. Understanding Southwest Airlines boarding groups can help travelers prepare for their flight and know when they are expected to board.

How Do Southwest Airlines Boarding Groups Work?

Southwest Airlines uses boarding groups to organize passengers before they enter the aircraft. Boarding priority can depend on the fare purchased, seat selection, and eligible loyalty benefits.

Here are some important points to understand:

• A-List Preferred members may receive priority boarding benefits.
• A-List members and eligible Choice Extra passengers may qualify for earlier boarding.
• Passengers with eligible Extra Legroom seats may receive an earlier boarding group.
• Choice Preferred and Choice fare passengers may receive different boarding assignments.
• Basic fare passengers may be assigned to a later boarding group.
• Passengers who qualify for preboarding should follow the airline's applicable procedures.

Your assigned boarding group and seat information should be checked on your boarding pass before arriving at the gate.

Can You Get Priority Boarding on Southwest Airlines?

Yes, eligible passengers may receive priority boarding benefits depending on their fare, membership status, or qualifying credit card benefits. Availability and eligibility requirements can vary.

Before your departure, check the latest Southwest Airlines boarding policies to see whether your ticket includes priority boarding or whether an additional option is available for purchase.

What Should You Check Before Boarding?

A little preparation can make the airport experience easier. Before boarding your Southwest Airlines flight, remember to:

• Check your boarding pass for your assigned seat and boarding group.
• Arrive at the departure gate with enough time to spare.
• Listen for announcements and follow airport staff instructions.
• Review baggage allowances and any applicable fees.
• Confirm boarding arrangements if you are traveling with family or a larger group.

Travelers making arrangements for several passengers should also check whether any special group booking conditions apply.

Conclusion

Understanding Southwest Airlines' assigned seating and boarding process helps passengers prepare for their journey with greater confidence. Check your boarding pass, review the benefits associated with your fare, and follow the airline's latest instructions before departure.
